Courthouses of the West: Laramie, Albany County, Wyoming. First "Woman Jury Memorial.

Courthouses of the West: Laramie, Albany County, Wyoming. First "Woman Jur...

Laramie, Albany County, Wyoming. First "Woman Jury" Memorial.

Memorial, MKTH photograph.

Accurate information on this event is actually fairly difficult to find.   The trial was the First Degree Murder trial of Andrew W. Howie.  The prosecutor, Albany County Attorney Stephen Downey, had only been in that role for a few months and objected to the women being seated as jurors, but was overruled by the Court, which held that as women had been granted the franchise in Wyoming, they also had the right to sit in juries.  Downey's objection was based on social convention, rather than the law.

Contrary to the way it is sometimes recounted, the jury was not all female, but half male and half female, with six women jurors.  It returned a verdict finding Mr. Howie guilty of manslaughter, which must have been included as a lessor offense in the charges.  The trial convinced Downey who in turn became a champion of women's suffrage.

This memorial is not at the Albany County Courthouse, but at the downtown railroad park.  Judicial proceedings in Laramie were originally held in a store at that location.

Courthouses of the West: Fallon County Courthouse, Baker Montana

Courthouses of the West: Fallon County Courthouse, Baker Montana:

Fallon County Courthouse, Baker Montana

This is the Fallon County Courthouse, which also houses the county and city offices and the county library, in Fallon County Montana. The building is located in the county seat of Baker.

I was obviously there in the middle of winter, and on a cold day at that.

An American Legion dedicated flag pole is in front of the courthouse, dedicated to the veterans of all wars.

Courthouses of the West: Platte County Courthouse, Wheatland Wyoming. Platte County, Wyoming Centennial.

Platte County Courthouse, Wheatland Wyoming

I've photographed this courthouse and its features at least three times. The first time was on a dreary July day in 2011.  I did it again in May 2014.  These most recent photographs are from November 2018.

A difference over this period of time is that a plaque commemorating the 100th anniversary of the founding of Platte County, which was in 1911, was put in. Additionally, a nice sidewalk clock was added on the walkway to the entrance of the courthouse.

Courthouses of the West: Platte County Courthouse, Wheatland Wyoming. The Irrigator

Platte County Courthouse, Wheatland Wyoming

This is the Platte County Courthouse located in Platte County's seat, Wheatland Wyoming. The courthouse, in addition to housing the county court for Platte County, also houses one of the four courtrooms of Wyoming's 8th Judicial District, with the others being located in Douglas, Lusk and Torrington. The courthouse was built in 1917, and somewhat uniquely it has a monument dedicated to farmers called "The Irrigator". The Statute of Liberty is a monument for Platte County World War Two servicemen.

All Wars Memorial Toronto Ontario Old City Hall and York County Courthouse Memorial, Toronto Canada.

Every once in a while, for the business traveler such as myself, you'll take a photo which makes it plain that your old compact camera (and I much prefer a SLR), is too long in the tooth and needs to be retired. This is that photo for me.

This is a memorial to Canadian veterans of all wars. It's a striking memorial in front of the Old Town Hall and York County Courthouse and these photos do not come close to doing it justice.

The front of the memorial features the wars "To Our Glorious Dead". The base includes the years during which Canada fought in World War One, World War Two and the Korean War.  On the left hand side of the memorial significant battles of World War One are noted, and I imagine that other such battles from the other wars are likewise noted.

Note, while I rarely publish these in their full size variants, I am here so that the details can be observed.

The USS Natrona (APA-214) was a Haskell class attack transport that served in World War Two.  Named after Natrona County Wyoming, the ship's wheel and some memorabilia from the ship is displayed in the old Natrona County Courthouse in Casper Wyoming.

Monuments in Lewistown, Montana

Lewistown Montana, which I recently went through, has a nice assortment of public monuments, several of which I missed, including a veterans park. Therefore, this is only a selection of the monuments that are located there.

The Fergus County Courthouse has a nice selection of monuments, at least one of which I was too hurried to photograph. This one is probably a post WWI vintage monument, but recalls the veterans of all wars.

This is the first time I've seen a memorial of this type.  It's to Pioneer Freighters of Central Montana.

This is a park in Lewistown, which appears to feature retired heavy ordnance.  The gun appears to be a 155 Long Tom of WWII vintage, while the missle is a Minuteman, I think.

Empty Saddle, Casper Wyoming

This isn't a war memorial, but presumably a memorial of some kind. "Empty Saddle", at the old Natrona County Courthouse in Casper Wyoming.

Sheridan County War Memorial, Sheridan Wyoming

This is the all wars memorial in Sheridan County, Wyoming. As can be seen, the base of this monument was put in during 1976, so the names on that part of the memorial only run through the Vietnam War. Located on the Sheridan County Courthouse's lawn, the accompanying courthouse wall has bronze markers for all US wars.

Fremont County All Wars Memorial

All wars memorial, Fremont County Wyoming.

These photographs were taken in two groups, which is probably obvious. The more recent ones depict the completed monument.
